It's very hard to make money on iOS and the iPad in particular. For everyone else the problem is largely due to how Apple mismanaged the app store.
For Adobe it's primarily because they see themselves as crossplatform and don't like introducing things that aren't on all versions. The problem is that only a few developers did. The problem is that 3rd parties can already do most of what people want now with the handoff API. Some sort of handoff capability might be better if it could be more universal, but that would depend on third-party support as well. So Apple would have to do a better job than both in order to really make it above the neat but hack-ish way that these apps currently operate. And the screen is not HDCP compliant so you can't use it as a video screen for Netflix etc.
Similarly, Duet is compelling but it's a bit laggy in practice, and the touch capability is not optimal with small OS X widgets, and you have to pay extra for Pen support. I've not used a Cintiq so I don't know how it compares, but it feels somewhat clunky to be using the iPad, pencil, and the laptop keyboard at the same time for tool shortcuts (Astropad has a little menu for some items but it's less than intuitive as well). I've coughed up for both Astropad and Duet for my Pro 9.7" but I haven't found a way to have them "stick" yet.Īstropad is quick but there is something about the way it captures only a portion of the screen that seems hacky in real use.
